Bournville and Selly Oak
Little League

little league

this page was last updated on 18th February 2008

The Netball Little League for girls in Years 4 to 6 living in the Bournville and Selly Oak areas is now starting its sixth year.

The Bournville and Selly Oak Little League consists of 9 teams of girls taken from schools in the Bournville and Selly Oak area only.

The teams are balanced in terms of

  • Age
  • Height
  • Ability

Each will play one other team every Saturday in the Summer Term, finishing with the Lord Mayor's Tournament for all Little Leagues. Teams are named after popular British birds (Greenfinches, Robins, Kingfishers, etc.) and kitted out in appropriate colours. Click here to see what our teams look like.

The Little League began preparations in January 2002, and our first playing season was 2003. The Chairman is Mrs. Rachel Maughan, and the secretary is Mrs. Dianne Barber.

We are experiencing difficulties setting up the Little League for 2008. The problem is finding a venue in the area that is safe, satisfactory and available. Further news will appear here when we have it.

The League is based at:

Selly Park Girls' School
Selly Park Road
Birmingham B29

Involvement of parents is vital to the success of the Little League.

All teams are managed by two adults or experienced secondary school netball players.

We are hoping to provide opportunities for training for helpers for example in:

  • umpiring
  • coaching
  • child protection

Playing in the Little League is free apart from a small registration fee, and kit is provided on payment of a deposit. There may be a charge for coaching if this is provided. Every year the players in each team choose the Players' Player of the Year for that team. The chosen girl gets to keep a trophy for twelve months.

The Little League is a separate organisation set up by Birmingham City Netball Club to provide fun and playing opportunities for existing and prospective younger members. It is hoped that players who wish to progress will join BCNC and play in its Intermediate teams (Years 7 to 10).
