 Birmingham Netball League

The League

The Birmingham Netball League has been established since 1946. We first started as an industrial league, players coming from local factories and communities e.g. Bournville, St Mary’s in Harborne. We have now grown into one of the largest leagues in the country. The BNL caters for all standards of play for those players that wish to play for fun and leisure and those that wish to play to a very high standard. The BNL has been very fortunate in that we have produced players that have gone on to be selected to represent their country. We have approximately 1,000 women playing in BNL, and the ages range from 15 (Year 10) to 60 plus.

Our league is governed by the rules of All England Netball Association (AENA). All BNL games are played to the BNL Constitution & League Rules. Our games are played mainly on Saturdays ( but there may be an occasional Sunday fixture). Games are played for 4 quarters of 15 minutes and games are officiated by two qualified umpires of at least AENA Beginners Award with exception of divisions 1 to 3 whereby umpires must be AENA ‘C’ award or above.

The BNL consists of 13 divisions of 8 teams. Our playing season starts from September through to April.

This year due to building work at Stockland Green and increasing the number of leagues to 13 divisions 3-7 will play the whole season at Stockland Green and divisions 8 - 13 the whole season at Shenley Court. (In previous years we have swapped venues at Christmas)

Our objectives:
  • To promote and encourage the game of netball
  • To foster and encourage sportsmanship betwee n clubs.
  • To raise the standard of play, umpiring and coaching.

The BNL actively encourages all participants of netball within the BNL to be active in all areas of our sport either as an umpire, coach or administrator. We ensure that courses are organised to help develop individuals that wish to gain qualifications in these specific areas.
